This weeks topic is Plagued by Ghosts (A character who IS a ghost or can see and/or interacts with the spiritual realm.)

Amanda

Okay so who here has read The Wicked Deep. our main character sees ghosts. Penny is sort of an outsider in her town. She lives on the island with the lighthouse and takes a little boat to the mainland everyday for school and everything. While I didn’t absolutely love Penny, she was definitely intriguing in this book. A great book for spooky season if you’re looking for something to read this Halloween!

Antonia

The In The Garden Trilogy by Nora Roberts follows three women as they deal with a ghost who’s haunting their house. The ghost has a sad, twisted backstory that I completely loved.

This weeks topic is A Truly Scary Character (A character that scares you beyond reason! For whatever reason…)

Amanda

Thaddeus and Dead Eye from Tales of a New World series by P.C. Cast. I mention both because one influences the other. You can’t really mention one (in relation to the story) without bringing up the other. Thaddeus changes drastically in this series and not in any sort of posititve ways. He gets meaner and angrier and more terrifying. He’s out to hurt anyone that he can and it’s all because of Dead Eye. I won’t spoil anything by explaining further. But Dead Eye is even worse than Thaddeus, the two of them together are only going to make this dystopian world a more evil place.

Antonia

The “Big Evil” from the Sign of Seven Trilogy by Nora Roberts. Seriously, that’s pretty much the only way they ever refer to it. It’s basically a demon that appears for seven days every seven years and creates absolute chaos in this town. I was so terrified of this thing that could make normal people do terrible things.

This weeks topic is A Character with Style (Showcase the look you would want to emulate, does it fit in the modern world? Or would you need to occupy a story one…)

Amanda

Laurel is the main character in the book Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaira. I love this book. I’ve read it quite a few times. It’s set up where we’re reading letters that Laurel wrote to dead people. It was supposed to be for a school assignment but it ended up taking on a life of its own and then Laurel felt she couldn’t really turn it in. I love Laurel in general because she’s really just trying to figure out who she is and where she belongs in the world. With this search, she finds her own sense of style as well. She frequently shops from her sisters closet and incorporates her sister’s pieces into her own wardrobe. I liked her style because it changed in little ways as she figured out who she wanted to be. If you haven’t read this book, you definitely need to.

Antonia

Branna from Blood Magick by Nora Roberts was a character I instantly admired, including her sense of style which to me seemed to fit perfectly between classy, sexy, and fun.

This weeks topic is Favorite Stephen King Character (A character from Stephen King’s creative mind that you love! It can be based upon ANY of his adaptions… Let’s prepare for the Halloween season!)

Amanda

I have only read one novel by Stephen King. Horror is a genre that I tend to stay away from. I don’t like to be scared. This goes for books and movies and everything else. So the character I have for this week’s topic is Carrie. She’s a little out there and definitely crazy. I read the book and then watched the movie and the book was SO much more detailed. I was so surprised by her story and how much I liked it. Carrie was a socially awkward girl that could move things with her mind and got picked on by her peers. But in the end, she sure showed them that she was a not a girl to be trifled with. Check out my review of Carrie here to see my thoughts about the whole book.

Antonia

I also avoid the horror genre like the plague to the point where I’ve never read any of King’s books or watched the movie adaptations. Not that I have anything against King particularly; in the past I’ve thought some of his books sounded really interesting but I’m way too much of a scaredy-cat.

This weeks topic is Bam! The Opposite Sex (A character you’d like to read about but the opposite sex of what they identified within the original story!)

Amanda

I have two choices for this weeks topic. I just couldn’t decide between the two, but one option was a female main character and the other choice was a male main character so I thought it worked out well.

The first is from my favorite book, Looking for Alaska by John Green. Our main character, Miles Halter (also known as Pudge) goes off to boarding school where his whole life changes. He makes new friends and does things that he’d never done before, smoking cigarettes, pranking other students, drinking. He falls in love with a girl and learns a lot about himself, about love, and about life. I have always wondered how this story would be different or the same had the main character been a girl instead of Miles. I think I may write this story one day, but I wonder how Miles experience would differ from the boarding school experiences of a female.

The second choice I have for this topic is my favorite series, A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. So I’d really love to read this series from Rhysands perspective, but that’s not really the question I’m being asked. I also think it would be so interesting and totally change the whole story had our main character, Feyre, been a male main character. This would be interesting because I think all the other roles would need to be reversed as well. So Rhysand would need to be a female and being a High Lord that might mean that all the other High Lords would be made female as well to have the story make sense. This role reversal would be excellent.

Antonia

Oh, man. All of them? I think gender-swaps are fascinating.

I think Bloodlines by Richelle Mead would be really cool if Adrian and Sydney’s roles were reversed. While they’re very complex, their personalities definitely fit with what you might typically expect as male and female. I’d love to see those stereotypes erased. Have a female vampire who’s kind of a player and a guy who’s a little neurotic and body-conscious.

This weeks topic is A Biker (Literally any character who rides a bike, a motorcycle or a scooter…)

Amanda

Del Bellator is a Firesoul. This means that she inherited part of a dragon’s soul. Because of this, she has the ability to steal the powers of others (but also killing them). She also inherited the covetousness of the dragons as well. One of the things that she covets is her motorcycle. She’s a kick-ass girl who is part phantom as well as firesoul. This means that she can basically be a ghost at will. Del is the star of the Dragon’s Gift: The Seeker series by Linsey Hall. I’d advise reading the first series before this one that follows Del’s sister. I just love everything about Del. She’s strong-willed and feisty. She’s loyal and fierce. She’s an excellent female lead that may or may not have a little too much affection for her motorcycle.

Antonia

Riley from The Talon series by Julie Kagawa. He’s the dreamy, gorgeous, rogue dragon that convinces Ember to abandon everything she’s known to follow him. Even though my feelings about their relationship changed by the end of the series, I will always love Riley. He’s an amazing character.

This weeks topic is High School First Love (Pick a character you’d want for your first love! Would it last forever or be a passing relationship?!)

Amanda-  Rather than picking a smoking hot bad boy that I would have LOVED to date during high school, I’m going to pick someone that I would totally have actually dated while I was a high schooler. Ronald Bilius Weasley is absolutely my favorite character from the Harry Potter series. He is exactly the kind of person that I would have dated in high school. A little awkward. Smart but not super nerdy. Great sense of humor. A big crazy family that does all the fun family things. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for redheads.

Antonia- I was not good at dating in high school. I tended to jump into relationships too quickly then realize I wasn’t all that interested so my relationships were always really short. I’m going to choose a character that I WISH I dated in high school. Garret Xavier Sebastian from the Talon series by Julie Kagawa would have made an excellent first boyfriend. He’s mature, kind, and grounded in a way most high school boys aren’t. There’s no drama with him. He accepts Ember for who she is and gives her space when she needs it. He’s exactly the kind of guy I wish I’d dated in high school; I think he would have been a good influence on me.

This weeks topic is Character Who’d Run into a Fire to _____ (Fill in the blank! The sky is the limit… if they’d run into a fire for any reason then they’re who you want to showcase!)

Amanda- This prompt has me super torn between two characters. So I shall briefly mention them both. The first is Stevie Bell from Maureen Johnson’s new series, Truly Devious. Stevie would run into a fire to solve a case. She’s an aspiring Sherlock Holmes and will do anything (including damage every relationship she has) to get to the bottom of a mystery.

The second character is Lady Jane Grey from My Lady Jane by Jodi Meadows,  Brodi Ashton, and Cynthia Hand. Lady Jane Grey would run into a fire to save her books from burning up. She is a true bookworm and is who I thought of first for this prompt because if I were to ever run into a fire it would be to save my husband, baby, dog, and books. Lady Jane would run into a fire to save her horsey husband and her books and I love her for it.

Antonia- I LOVE THIS PROMPT. It has so many amazing possibilities. The first one to pop into my head though was Leo Valdez from The Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan. He would run into a fire to freak out people who don’t know he’s fireproof. I can absolutely see him in the flames, screaming like he’s being burned alive. I think it’d fit his goofy sense of humor perfectly.

This weeks topic is – A Creature You’d Want to Adopt (An animal or creature character you’d want as a companion.)

Amanda- I’m going to choose Bryaxis from the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas. This is one of my absolute favorite series and there are so many different creatures. Bryaxis was one of my favorite creatures that I’ve read about in quite a while. So terrifying that Cassian won’t even describe what it looks like to anyone else, so old that the only thing it desires is someone to talk to and a window to see the stars. I would love to talk to Bryaxis and learn the things that it has seen through its life and get it to share some of its knowledge with me. I don’t know that I would want Bryaxis as a traveling companion or anything similar but I would love to be the person to spend time in the library fulfilling the agreement made with it for someone to talk to. I’m so intrigued to see where this part of the ACOTAR story goes once the next book/series comes out.

Antonia- For me, this will always and forever be Shalkan from The Obsidian Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory. He’s a unicorn; you’re probably thinking pure, fluffy being of joy and goodness, right? Well you got the fluffy part right. Shalkan is sarcastic AF, stubborn, badass, and all-around not what you’d expect from a unicorn. I love him so much.

This week’s topic is A Brainiac (A super smart character. They could be clever, sly, book smart, manipulative if they apply their brain power it counts.)

Amanda- I really put some thought into this week’s character selection. When I first saw this topic there were so many characters that ran through my mind. A few stereotypical nerdy ones, a few clever and manipulative, a few just smart. Looking at my bookshelves I saw many choices until my eyes settled on one series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson (reviewed here). One of the main characters, Lisbeth Salander, is an amazing woman. She’s insanely smart to the point where she’s an outcast, but mostly by her own choice. She’s also a total kick-ass human being who doesn’t take lip from anyone. She’s not afraid to put you in your place if you’ve wronged her. Lisbeth is also basically a super hacker who does what she wants because she’s just that good. Also, covered in tattoos and piercings, she’s just the coolest brainiac I could have picked.

Antonia- I have so many I could use for this one. The trouble is that all the characters I can think of are smart in such different ways. Thinking about it though, I have to choose Kvothe from The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Kvothe is such a complex character with so many different masks that he wears it can be hard to know exactly who he is. From the beginning, he’s always been intelligent; as a child he was this sponge that took in all the knowledge he could without ever seeming to fill up. Up until adulthood he remains that way but adds street smarts, cleverness, and a stubborn will to achieve his goals through any means. He becomes manipulative (though not an evil character by any means) to the point where sometimes his schemes are so convoluted that they cause him even more problems. He’s such a fascinating character that I recommend this book to people for that reason alone.

Thanks for reading bookworms! What character would you choose for this week’s topic? Who’s the coolest brainiac you’ve read about? Feel free to let us know in the comments!

This weeks topic is Supernatural Hottie (Literally a character who is drop dead gorgeous and from a supernatural race or less literally a sexually diverse character who is a hottie).

Amanda- This is going to be obvious to those that read any of my bookish posts. I’m actually obsessed with the Darkling from Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. I’m a sucker for a good villain and the Darkling is a great villain. I loved getting to learn more about him in the second and third books of the trilogy. He was a well-rounded character. Dark and mysterious at first but then we started to understand his motivations and the things that are driving him to be so horrible and evil and fantastic. Learning his backstory also makes you feel a little bad for him and want to love him and fix him and help him be good. I don’t know what it is but I really just love a good villain and the Darkling is a wonderful one.

Antonia- There’s just so many to choose from. Roth, the demon prince from The Dark Elements series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, has always been one of my favorites. I adored Adrian from The Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead since he was first introduced in the Vampire Academy series. Acheron from The Dark-Hunters series by Sherrilyn Kenyon was a supporting character throughout the series that I always swooned over and when he finally got his own book and I read about his absolutely heartbreaking backstory, it only made me love him more. Seriously guys, do you actually expect me to choose just one?

This week’s topic is Anti-Establishment Group of Badasses (A group of three or more characters that belong together as they fight the “good fight” – this can be interpreted however you like.)

Amanda- This was totally an easy topic for me. I would for sure have to go with my favorite squad from the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas. Even if we don’t include Feyre and Rhysand – Mor, Cassian, Azriel, and Armen are still a fantastic group of badasses that have hearts of gold and mostly do the right thing all while showing the world their resting bitch faces. They all have hardships that they dealt with in their past that shaped them into the good people they are today, people that fight the good fight for those that can’t fight for themselves. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I would love to be a part of this squad. They have such a fun dynamic that’s actually pretty similar to myself and my husband and our friends now that I think about it.

Antonia- I think I have to go with the group I read about most recently: Cass, Del, and Nyx from the Dragon’s Gift series by Linsey Hall. Technically, there’s three series; one for each girl, each made up of five books. After losing their memories around age fifteen, all they know is they’re being hunted by someone they call The Monster and that their powers make them criminals in the eyes of the magical government. They’re sisters by choice but I never once felt that they were anything but family. They’re strong, compassionate, badass ladies who always do what’s right even at the risk of their own lives. I’d absolutely love to be best friends with them.
