Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each week we talk about our top ten with a different topic provided by Jana. This week’s topic is Favorite Book Quotes (these could be quotes from books you love, or bookish quotes in general).
“But it’s also a reminder that being quiet doesn’t always signify weakness. Sometimes it takes great strength to find that silence. Sometimes it takes incredible strength to survive.”
Internment by Samira Ahmed
“Nothing but a symbol? People die for symbols. People have hope because of symbols. They’re not just lines. They’re histories, cultures, traditions, given shape.”
The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
“Strange, isn’t it? To love a book. When the words on the pages become so precious that they feel like part of your own history because they are. It’s nice to finally have someone read stories I know so intimately.”
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
“Those who cannot own their choices will always be mastered by fate.”
There Will Come a Darkness by Katy Rose Pool
“I never needed this race, or a hashtag, or the king to be a queen. I was born royalty. All I had to do was pick up my crown.”
You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson
“The bad stuff will be there … If we want to fight it, we have to find joy where we can. We have to find beauty. We have to take our moments to be happy. Because the joy is what keeps us strong and reminds us we have something to fight for.”
We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia
“The patron saint of the ocean is known for containing many parts of herself: she is a nurturer, but she is also a ferocious defender. & so I remember that to walk this world you must be kind but also fierce.”
Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo
“I hope you will find the cracks in the world and wedge them wider, so the light of other suns shines through; I hope you will keep the world unruly, messy, full of strange magics; I hope you will run through every open Door and tell stories when you return.”
The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow
“Anger is a gift. Remember that.” She stood. “You gotta grasp onto it, hold it tight and use it as ammunition. You use that anger to get things done instead of just stewing in it.”

“Be funny, but don’t hog the spotlight. Be smart, but you have a lot to learn. Don’t be a doormat, but God, don’t be bossy. Be chill. Be easygoing. Act like one of the guys. Don’t actually act like one of the guys. Be a feminist. Support the sisterhood. Wait, are you like, gay? Maybe kiss a girl if he’s watching though–that’s hot. Put a show on. Don’t even think about putting on a show, that’s nasty. Don’t be easy. Don’t give it up. Don’t be a prude. Don’t be cold. Don’t put him in the friend zone. Don’t act desperate. Don’t let things go too far. Don’t give him the wrong idea. Don’t blame him for trying. Don’t walk alone at night. But calm down! Don’t worry so much. Smile! Remember, girl: It’s the best time in the history of the world to be you. You can do anything! You can do everything! You can be whatever you want to be! Just as long as you follow the rules.”
Rules for Being a Girl by Candace Bushnell & Katie Cotugno
These are some quotes that have really stuck with me from a few books that I’ve read recently. Sorry, the last one is so long (it was actually way longer), I shortened it the best I could without losing the message of the original passage from the book (which is like two pages long). What books did you quote this week?
Keep on reading lovelies, Amanda.
So many powerful quotes! The one from The Starless Sea really hits me. I need to read that ASAP!
I also saved that line from Clap When You Land. Acevedo has written so many of my favourite quotes!
You definitely need to! I actually wrote this post in advance and had to come back and swtich something out so I could include a quote from The Starless Sea.
This makes me so eager to read Alix E. Harrow! I have The Once and Future Witches just waiting for me to finish my current reads! 😀
Ahhh, I can’t wait for that one to come out!
I love that quote form the Gilded Wolves!

I do love that Liz Lightly quote from You Should See Me in a Crown. It reminds me of how she took the power back (same with Rules for Being a Girl)
Yess. They’re both so good.
Brilliant quotes!! I love the Starless Sea one, I read it recently and it made me smile to see someone else liked it too. An amazing book. I tried this TTT, but ended up turning it into a game guessing which book the quotes were from. See how you get on!! 🙂 https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2020/09/29/top-ten-tuesday-guess-the-books-for-my-favourite-quotes/
I also read The Starless Sea recently and it was amazing. I’ll check it out!
Thanks for sharing this great content. I enjoyed reading them.
Great job for compiling these book quotes.
Thank you! They’re some of my favorites!
