Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each week we talk about our top ten with a different topic provided by Jana. This week’s topic is top ten – Favorite tropes
Childhood friends to lovers (probably because I married my best friend)
Enemies to lovers (who doesn’t love the tension and drama?!)
Unlikely hero/chosen one (Harry Potter anyone?)
Mixed/complicated families (Give me all the step-parents, adoptive siblings, etc.)
Small towns with big secrets (I love books set in small towns)
Artificial Intelligence as characters (terrifying but somehow also exhilarating)
Secret identities (hidden royals, missing Shadowhunter family lines, give it all to me)
This is all I could come up with for this week’s topic. Tropes are something I never really paid attention to until becoming a part of the Twitter book community. What tropes do you love?
Keep on reading lovelies, Amanda.
Ooo AI characters! That’s a great one and one I hadn’t thought about! I love that too!
!
Great list! I love a secretive small town, too.
I love complicated family plots, too. Great list!
I love A.I. characters, too! I think it’s interesting how often they’re written in a frightening way. Maybe it’s because Data from Star Trek was my first exposure to this trope? But I think of them as at least having the possibility of being friendly.
My TTT
AIDEN from the Illuminae Files was one of my favorite AIs. And also Iko from the Lunar Chronicles!
Seems a lot of people love enemies to lovers, and I’m definitely guilty of that, too. xD Yes yes yes to AI as characters! I haven’t seen that on anyone else’s list (and didn’t think to add it to mine, either), but AIDAN from Illuminae and Thunderhead from Arc of a Scythe are some of my favorite characters. Because AI are people, too. :3
Here’s my TTT post.
Yes to both of those!!
ooo I love the small town with big secrets one! I don’t think I’ve read many books with that trope but the few that I have, I’ve loved! One of my other favorites not mentioned here is fake dating, it gets me every single time
I do like fake dating sometimes. I recently read Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen McManus and it was totally small town with big secrets.
oh I’ll have to check that one out!
The audiobook was pretty good!
LOVE SMALL TOWNS WITH BIG SECRETS!! omg especially when there is a murder!
Yes!! Two Can Keep a Secret was just like that!
I absolutely adore the fact that you married your best friend. 100% love that trope in literature, but love it even more in person–seeing someone marry someone that is so close. Great picks for the rest of these tropes! That one obviously takes the cake, though.
Thank youuu. I totally agree and after we got married it totally made sense why I loved the friends to lovers trope so much hahah!
I would say out of the tropes on your list I liked mixed/complicated families and small towns with big secrets. I don’t care that much for romance (even though I don’t dislike it entirely either) so usually I don’t like lovey dovey tropes that much. I’m glad to hear you ended up marrying your best friend though… people say that’s the way to do it! 🙂
I’m a sucker for a good romance but totally understand that it’s not for everyone. Mixed families always give me all the feels because I come from one & small towns with big secrets are usually pretty good mysteries!
